After receiving an overwhelming amount of success on the previous model, BMW have decided to add a second generation to the 4 series line up. The new four door coupe captures the imagination with its noticeably enhanced driving dynamics mixed with BMW’s new design language that is present in other models that BMW have previously released.

Performance

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes in multiple variants, including a BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe, BMW 430i Gran Coupe, BMW 420i Gran Coupe, BMW 420d Gran Coupe and a BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupe. 

The M44Oi is powered by a 374 BHP six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with a combined MPG of 33.2 – 35.3 according to WLTP test cycles. The 430i model debuts BMW’s new four-cylinder petrol engine which can produce 245 BHP and also includes an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head so emission levels are reduced. This model also has a combined MPG of 37.2 – 41.5 in WLTP test cycles. In the 420i model, fuel consumption comes in at 38.7 – 42.8 MPG in WLTP cycle tests, from a 184 BHP petrol engine. The 420d model’s fuel consumption comes in at 52.3 – 58.9 MPG and the 420d xDrive model comes in at 49.6 – 55.4 MPG according to WLTP cycle tests.

Another feature to note for the M440i variant and diesel powered variants of the car, mild hybrid technology has been implemented into the car to improve both dynamic driving experiences and efficiency. The 48V starter-generator also adds 11 BHP on tap when accelerating from a stand still or if the driver is at speed. Each engine in the 4 Series Gran Coupe partners up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, however, drivers do have the option to include the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission complements its sharper shift dynamics and shift paddles on the steering wheel with a sprint function, this comes as standard in the M440i variant of the Gran Coupe. Not only does this change the characteristics of the the car, but also allows the driver to maximise dynamic performance for sudden bursts of power or overtaking.

An active air flap control system comprising flaps at the top and bottom, plus air curtains and an almost completely sealed underbody optimise the car’s aerodynamics. An adaptive M suspension is available for drivers as an optional extra and it combines the characteristics of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers, and therefore offers the widest possible range of driving experiences on the sporty-to-comfortable spectrum.

Technology

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe also comes with a wide range of technologies to make sure the driving experience feels premium and everything that the driver expects when purchasing a BMW. For example, with the new Gran Coupe, over 40 functions have been designed and developed to enable comfortable and safe driving and parking are available as standard or options. A few of these functions include Active Cruise Control with automatic Speed Limit Assist, route monitoring and traffic light recognition (only available in Germany), plus Steering and Lane Control Assistant.

Standard technologies that come with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe include, front collision warning, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning, Park Distance Control, the Reversing Assist Camera and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant. The driver also has the option to purchase the Parking Assistant Plus function with Surround View and Remote 3D View as an optional extra.

As standard, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes with BMW’s Operating System 7 so drivers and passengers can have a more pleasurable and luxurious driving experience. The interface of this system can be chosen when purchasing the vehicle, these options include, control display touchscreen, familiar BMW Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, voice control or optional BMW gesture control. However, if you were more interested in advanced technology/services in a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe then you may be interested in a range of highly intelligent services such as BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW’s Digital Key, Connected Music and Remote Software Upgrades.

On the internal navigation system, BMW has incorporated their cloud-based navigation system as standard. This system offers the driver extremely fast and precise route calculation and arrival times, real-time traffic data updates at short intervals and the ability to enter any word when searching for a destination. Another function to be noted about the infotainment system is that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is fitted as standard.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Exterior

BMW describes the new Gran Coupe as expressive, elegant and powerful, which is everything you would expect when purchasing or driving a car from BMW. The expressive front end is highlighted by bold lines and three-dimensional surfaces to really make the front end of the car seem luxurious and aggressive. BMW has also incorporated the new design of the classic kidney grills, the large grills takes advantage of the full height of the front bumper to radiate the feeling of assured presence. On either side of the kidney grills you can find the newly designed LED headlights, which are slim and feature U-shaped fibre-optic light guides for the daytime driving lights. There is also the option of Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight including BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant.

Coming down the sides of the Gran Coupe, BMW has incorporated frames windows on the doors to conserve the modern and luxurious look of the car as well as flush fitting handles. The shoulders of the car are powerful and shape an elegant, sporty looking silhouette which also hints a low-slung, muscular stature. As standard with 17-inch light-alloy wheels. Standard specification for the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé includes 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M Sport differential with electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential.

Following the roofline down towards the back of the car, it culminates into a pronounced spoiler lip on the tailgate. The LED rear lights are also darkened and extend well into the flanks of the Gran Coupe to give off a more futuristic look to the car, but keeping that classic feel of a BMW body. Bespoke design features add dynamic flourishes to M Sport cars and the BMW M model. An M Carbon exterior package can be specified as an option

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Interior

The new Gran Coupe is as elegant on the inside as it is on the outside, a versatile interior offers generous amounts of space in both the front and rear with 470 litres of boot space, the primary capacity in the directly viewable area of the boot having grown by 39 litres. However, the boot space can be increased to 1,290 litres by folding down the rear seats. 

In the front, occupants will find a high centre console that flows through the instrument panels and into the doors to present anyone inside the vehicle with a cocooning feel.  A start/stop button can be found on the control panel that has a classic BMW design to it, making the interior feel much more luxurious. The panel is also host to a number of other controls for the vehicle, for example, the Driving Experience Control and electromechanical parking brake along with a gearshift lever, designed specifically on the model the driver owns. An iDrive operating system with 8.8-inch control display and a 5.1-inch colour display in the instrument cluster is also featured on the centre console and features a wide range of functions like BMW’s navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Furthermore, behind the steering wheel drivers can find a high-resolution instrument cluster with a screen size of 12.3 inches and a 10.25-inch control display.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe features sports seats made from leather to help cradle the driver whilst driving in a dynamic fashion around corners. The steering wheel also features a sporty design and is wrapped in leather as standard.  The rear seat bench is also made from leather and includes folding head restraints as well as space and the ability to allow three child seats to be fitted. On the M440i and M-Sport variants, knee pads are featured on the centre console to protect the driver when taking corners at speed.

Options to enhance the driving experience within the Gran Coupe include items such as seat heating and ventilation, Vernasca and BMW Individual leather trim options, Sensatec or leather coverings for the instrument panel, the M Sport package Pro, a large glass slide/tilt sunroof, ambient lighting and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System.
